Why I Don't Let My Students Cram for UPCAT, ACET, or DCAT — And Why It Works

Every year, thousands of Filipino students make the same mistake when preparing for their college entrance examinations. They wait until two or three months before the exam — sometimes less — and then try to absorb years of material in a fraction of the time. They cram. And most of them pay for it. I have been coaching students for entrance examinations for over 18 years. I have seen every approach, every study style, and every outcome. And the single most consistent pattern I have observed across nearly two decades of teaching is this: the students who pass their dream schools are almost never the ones who crammed. They are the ones who started early.

The UPCAT, ACET, DCAT, and USTET are not memory tests. They are reasoning tests. They measure how well you think, how quickly you process information, how accurately you read and analyze, and how confidently you apply mathematical and scientific concepts under time pressure. You cannot develop these skills in two months. You cannot speed-read your way to strong reading comprehension. You cannot practice your way to fast mental arithmetic in a few weeks. These are skills that develop over months of consistent, structured, guided practice — and they require time to consolidate in the brain. Cramming also creates test anxiety. When a student has only partially covered the material and knows it, they walk into the examination room already afraid — and that fear affects their performance in ways that have nothing to do with their actual intelligence or capability.

Most of my students begin coaching at least 6 months before their target examination — and my most successful students typically begin a full year in advance. This gives us time to identify the student's genuine strengths and gaps through a thorough initial assessment, because every student is different. Some are strong in science but weak in reading speed. Some are excellent writers but struggle with word problems. A personalized program means we spend time on what actually matters for that specific student — not a generic syllabus. We build foundational skills properly: Singaporean Math techniques for word problems, speed math for mental ability sections, grammar mastery for language components, and essay structure for personal statement writing. We simulate examination conditions repeatedly over time through mock examinations, timed practice sets, and full paper run-throughs — because performance under pressure is itself a skill that takes repetition to develop. And we work on confidence, because a student who has been preparing for a year walks into the examination room differently than one who has been preparing for two months. They have practiced this. They know what to expect. They are ready.

I am a University of the Philippines Diliman graduate, PRC Board Examination Top Notcher (2015), and MENSA Philippines member with over 18 years of experience coaching students for UPCAT, ACET, DCAT, USTET, SAT, IELTS, LAE, NMAT, and other entrance and licensure examinations. I work exclusively one-on-one online — one student at a time, with my full attention and a fully personalized program. I accept a strictly limited number of students per term to ensure the quality of every coaching relationship. I have coached students from Philippine Science High School, private and public schools across Metro Manila, and students based abroad — into UP, Ateneo, De La Salle, UST, and other top Philippine institutions.

If your target examination is in 6 months — start now. If it is in a year — start now. If it is in 3 months — start now and we will make the most of the time available. The best time to begin was last year. The second best time is today. To inquire about availability and enrollment: fb.com/MissArraC — fb.com/teacherarra — 0936-921-8511.
